Canada Work Permit

Canada Work Permit

To work in Canada, you must apply and be approved for a Canadian work permit (some exceptions apply). There are several different types of work permits:

  • Open Work Permit for spouse

  • Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)

  • Co op Work Permit

  • Employers-specific Work Permit

Open Work Permit for spouse

This type of work permit allows you to work for any employer in Canada. It is common for spouses of international students enrolled in a designated learning institution college or university.

Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)

You are eligible to apply for a post graduation work permit if you attended a designated post-secondary institution in Canada. One year of study may get you a work permit for an additional year, while a two-year program may get you a work permit for up to three years after the completion of your studies.

Co op Work Permit

If you are required to work during your studies, like an internship, you are required to have a Co Op Work Permit. This kind of work permit can be applied when you first submit your Study Permit application.

Employers-specific Work Permit

This work permit is issued to a specific employer, and usually they have a positive LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) supporting this application. There are some exceptions to this, where your work permit is LMIA-exempt, like the Open Work Permit for spouse or PGWP.

Why should I retain an immigration consultant to assist with my Canadian work permit application?

Our immigration consultant Lucas Nonnemacher will check your eligibility to apply for a Canadian work permit. There are several different options available to apply for a Work Permit, but the majority of the programs require the applicant to have a job offer that is supported by a LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment).

During our initial consultation, Lucas will check your eligibility for a work permit, as well answer all your questions and plan next steps. Once we confirm that you are eligible to apply for a Work Permit, we will sign a retainer agreement and provide you with an initial checklist of documents.

We will make sure that your application is complete before we submit it to immigration Canada. We will accompany you from the early stages of your application until your application is processed and finalized by the government.
