Is Canada Safe To Live In?

Surely you may have already asked this question when you searched the search engines about life in Canada, or right after watching a program on television that showed a little about Canadian culture.

In today's post, we'll bring you some important points about security in Canada. We are going to show aspects of urban security and point out some crime rates in the country.

Security in cities

In fact, Canada is very safe to live. When walking on the streets of Canadian cities, in residential areas it is not common to see houses with high fences and walls, railings and security systems with electric fences. The fences that exist are placed only to delimit land, create a more private space or to prevent domestic animals from escaping, but they are never placed in order to prevent assaults on homes, as these types of crimes are extremely rare.

A point that is very different from Brazil, for example, is that banks do not have revolving doors or metal detectors.

Indexes

This does not mean that there are no robberies of any kind in Canada. In larger cities and regions such as Greater Toronto, which has approximately 6 million inhabitants, there are more incidents of crimes such as armed robbery or homicide than in smaller cities. Still, compared to other countries, crime rates of this type are low. The Canadian government recorded 678 homicides in 2019 (last official survey). The rate is 1.8 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants.

In cities like Halifax, which has 450,000 inhabitants, it is more common for minor crimes to occur, such as theft of purses, backpacks and wallets.

Cities in general are yes, safe, but it is not advisable to leave your belongings  out of sight at any given point.

As people in Canada have the habit of parking their car on the street instead of in the garage, car robberies and theft of belongings inside vehicles also occur, especially at night. Therefore, the warning is valid: it is necessary to lock the car at night. In 2019, there was an increase in cases such as theft, robbery and damage to property in the country.

A place to love

Another aspect that makes people choose Canada to live is that in this country, it is possible to love freely: the rates of discrimination against LGBTQ+ people are low.

Civil unions between people of the same sex are allowed throughout the country, and there is a lot of freedom of expression wherever you go.

Security system

Something that is very common to have in the neighborhoods of smaller cities is the "neighbourhood watch" - neighbors who take care of each other. In residential neighborhoods, the community looks out for its residents, warning in social networking groups, for example, if there are different people in the vicinity. If someone identifies a crime that is currently taking place, the neighbor must call 911 to notify authorities.

In Canada, there is an application linked to the police, called “Amber Alert”. The system, which originated in the United States, issues alerts when children and young people disappear. The application also works to warn in case of accidents, possible attacks with firearms or weapons of another type, such as knives, for example.
