Applying for a spousal sponsorship to Canada

Two is always better than one, right? So, if you’re thinking about applying for a spousal sponsorship to Canada for your significant other, you’ve come to the right place!

Immigrating to Canada doesn’t have to be difficult! If you’re unfamiliar with the process, spousal sponsorship is how a Canadian citizen or permanent resident can sponsor their partner to live in Canada permanently. In Canada, we know how truly important it is for a family to be together and we’ll do our best to make this happen!

WHO CAN APPLY?

Anyone who has official Canadian permanent residency or Canada citizenship can sponsor their partner to join them. In addition to being a canadian citizen, applicants must also be at least 18 years of age, currently living in the country, and are willing or able to provide basic financial needs to their spouse or significant other for three years after they arrive.

HOW DO I APPLY?

The first step to becoming a sponsor is applying to become one (did you see that coming?). Once you, a Canadian citizen or PR, are approved as a sponsor, your spouse or partner must apply for permanent residence in Canada. These two applications are submitted together.

Second, you’ll get an application package from the Canadian government which will include:

·      document checklists for you and the person you want to sponsor,

·      forms that you and the person you want to sponsor need to fill out,

·      instruction guide to help you and your family members fill out the forms correctly.

Third, you must pay your application fees. These fees include:

·      processing fees for you, the persons you’re sponsoring and their dependants,

·      the right of permanent residence fee,

·      the biometrics fee (fingerprints and a photo)

The last step is to submit your application. The application for spousal sponsorship is submitted by the sponsor, so they should always make sure to read the ENTIRE application package before submitting.

AFTER YOU APPLY:

You may be required to send in additional information such as medical exams, police, certificates, or RCMP clearance, so it’s important to have these things on hand if needed. Processing time for applications can vary, but it usually takes 12 months.
